John
Spanish and French Tutor

Spanish and French Tutor
John tutors in Spanish and French: a fully qualified teacher, with over forty years in education, he has worked with students at all levels from primary to university. A graduate of St Catherine’s College, Oxford, John holds a doctorate in Latin American Literature from King’s College London.
John currently focuses on teaching French and Spanish to GCSE (Years 10 and 11), and Spanish up to A Level and occasionally beyond, having successfully guided a number of university students through to their final exams.
In his twelve years working with Osborne Cawkwell, John has prepared language students for every GCSE and A Level examination board, and for the IB Diploma. Known for his patience, good humour and empathy with students from all backgrounds, John’s warmth and encouragement has often proved decisive in obtaining the best results from his students.
John works with students in mainstream education, but also has considerable experience with homeschooled students and students whose special emotional needs prevent them from attending school. He believes that kindness is a vital factor in fostering success in the educational process.
In addition to his work as a tutor, John is a musician, artist, poet and an internationally recognised translator of Latin American poetry.
John’s approach to language teaching is best described as traditional-progressive, in which emphasis is placed on providing students with a firm grasp of grammar while incorporating as much exciting and relevant up-to-date material as possible, so that the joy of language learning is constantly enhanced.
“John is so much more than an ordinary language tutor. He is also a mentor, very polished and encouraging of his students. He not only got my daughter to achieve her exam goals, he helped her regain her confidence. His positive attitude did that! John is very patient and encouraging. A tutor who ensures that his lessons are varied and productive. He is also very prompt with communication and feedback. My daughter ultimately passed her Spanish A Level exams with flying colours.
