With thanks to Helene Jones of Nimble Minds, for writing this blog for us.
When parents first think about 7+ entrance assessments, it’s easy to focus on papers, past questions and “getting ahead.” But in reality, the children who perform most confidently are those who have developed a strong foundation of core thinking skills long before the tests begin.
At the heart of every 7+ assessment is Reasoning. Mathematical Reasoning makes up over 50% of the 7+ maths tests. Inferential and Creative Comprehension and the ability to express thoughts clearly are the key English skills tested. Strong Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning are crucial for success with these ever more competitive tests. Children are not simply being tested on what they know, but how they think. Can they spot patterns? Can they apply logic step-by-step? Can they stay calm when a question feels unfamiliar?
Alongside this sits language. A rich vocabulary and the ability to understand precise instructions are essential. Many children come unstuck not because the question is too difficult, but because they haven’t fully grasped what is being asked.
Another key area is attention and accuracy. In competitive London schools, small mistakes matter. Children need to develop the discipline to check carefully, work methodically and avoid rushing.
Finally, there is confidence under pressure. Timed tasks, interviews and group settings all require children to think clearly and articulate their ideas with ease.
These skills are not built overnight. They are developed gradually through the right balance of challenge, structure and encouragement.
At Nimble Minds, we focus on nurturing these foundations from an early stage—ensuring children are not just prepared for the test, but ready to thrive within it.
