I have worked as a Maths tutor in London since November 2004. I have taught Maths for 16+ Common Entrance as well as scholarship to Eton College, Harrow and Westminster. Furthermore I tutor Maths at 13+, GCSE, IGCSE, A Level and IB. One of the advantages of one-to-one tuition is that an attentive tutor, focusing on one pupil, can quickly determine a) whether or not the pupil understands the concept being explained, and b) if they do not understand, what is stopping them from understanding. As for practice, I would say that Maths, being more abstract than some other subjects, is very easy to forget. A thorough and durable understanding cannot be wholly passive, it comes through action. It is important that the pupil is actively answering questions for a large part of the lesson.
