As we all spend more time online and working remotely, the need to create stronger personal relationships is more pressing.
Last July, we decided to leave our office at WeWork as we were working more and more from home. With my team members spread out from Hampshire to Essex, it makes logistical and financial sense to not travel into an office daily – and for those of us with families, it’s a god-send to be able to do drop-off and pick-ups.
However, as trendy and modern as working remotely is, it poses new challenges in terms of keeping us all connected and feeling part of a team. We meet once a fortnight in Holborn to touch base in person – and hold regular online meetings to keep the momentum going.
Seeing each other less has made the time we are together more precious and so the chat is more meaningful and more ground is covered. If you are sitting next to someone each day, it is perhaps easier to talk about banal issues or perhaps even not to talk at all.
And our Christmas tutor drinks last week was further testament to the personal relationships we have created and nurtured. Throughout the night tutors told us again and again that we were the friendliest, most supportive agency they worked with and with us, they felt part of a family.
So perhaps nurturing relationships with people we don’t regularly see has been in our blood from the get-go? Making our tutors feel valued and cared for through emails and phone calls has come naturally – so hopefully we can use what is instinctive to us to create a stronger OC team than ever before.
