Supporting English as Additional Language learners

English as an Additional Language

English as an additional language (EAL) refers to learners whose first language is not English.

Osborne Cawkwell offers private tuition to students needing English language support for many different reasons.

Some students may want to improve their grammar or conversational skills; some may speak a different language at home and need their spoken and/or written English enhanced for academic purposes.

Others may have recently moved to the UK (or are planning to move soon) and need effective tuition to help them grasp English quickly. This enables students to integrate into a new school more smoothly and follow the curriculum comfortably.

Often parents of children who have recently moved to the UK will also request private tuition in English language to improve their own level.

Whether students are at beginner, intermediate or advanced level, very young children or adults, we can introduce you to highly experienced private tutors in English as an additional language.

Tutors tailor both their teaching methods and lesson content to each student’s exact needs. They will encourage younger or more shy students to find their ‘additional voice’; they will give them the confidence to push their language skills forward.

Tutors supporting a child with English as an additional language can teach in person or online. This is particularly helpful if students are residing abroad. Rapid improvement can be made when lessons are regular on a weekly basis, or over a more intense period, if time is of the essence.

We work closely with our consultant partners whose students need English as an additional language and are often changing school systems. We discuss each case in detail to decide how to best support those students so they become confident learners and their English flourishes.

Some schools require students coming from abroad to take an English test before offering them a place to assess their competence. Although tests may vary from school to school, tutors can tailor such preparation to the student’s aptitude and the school’s requirements.

We are often asked for private tutors who can prepare students for the IELTS exam. Working one-on-one with an experienced tutor can help target weak areas and improve scores. This gives  students a better chance of studying at their first choice institution.
